The book “The Promise of India, How Prime Ministers Nehru to Modi Shaped the Nation (1947-2019)” examines Indian foreign policy and national economy related decisions and the context in which these were taken at the Prime Minister’s level. This book covers such decision making over almost 72 years from 1947 till end May 2019. As the recent change in the status of Jammu & Kashmir has so amply demonstrated we do need to look back closely to events of the past to better understand current happenings. A recurring theme in the book is the extent to which optimism and cynicism at the mass public level has waxed or waned during the terms of the various Prime Ministers, and why.
